The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, at the Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (BYSD) 39th Ordinary General Assembly, drew attention to the fact that 85% of the vegetable oil consumed in Turkey is sunflower oil, said, “Vegetable oil industry depends on imports. We are losing billions of dollars every year. We need to double our sunflower cultivation areas.”
Hisarcıklıoğlu
emphasized that adulteration causes damage to both consumers and producers, and
those engaging in adulteration should be banned from the profession.
Hisarcıklıoğlu also stated that BYSD officials have been fighting against
adulteration.
Deputy
Trade Minister Sezai Uçarmak stated that the vegetable oil sector has the power
to compete with the world and pointed out the measures which are necessary for
the sector. Uçarmak said, “The vegetable oil sector is dependent on imports in
regards raw materials; it is necessary to take measures against this. This can
be achieved by production planning, quota system application rescheduling or
comprehensively planning process regime to favor domestic production to support
the sector.”
Tahir
Büyükhelvacıgil, BYSD Council President stated that due to the lack of raw
material in sunflowers, the sector has become dependent on foreign countries,
necessitating premium support and incentives for producers, increasing annual
production volume to 2.5-3 million tons.
