The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu said that for the faster growth of the Protect Food Campaign, TOBB, together with its 365 chambers and exchanges, as well as its 1.5 million members will work all across the country and in all local media.
Hisarcıklıoğlu
participated in the introductory meeting of the Protect Your Food Campaign,
which was held in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and
FAO, by video conference method.
Pointing
out the rising importance of the concepts of food waste, food loss and food
safety, Hisarcıklıoğlu noted that 821 million people worldwide are struggling
with hunger. Hisarcıklıoğlu said that in contrast to this, a third of the food
produced is wasted.
Stating
that food loss is the amount of loss of product in the process stretching from the
harvest process leading up to the retail process, while food waste occurs in after-retail
consumption Hisarcıklıoğlu, “Unfortunately, the biggest food loss in our
country is in vegetables and fruits. Half of the fruits and vegetables produced
are wasted without being consumed.”
Hisarcıklıoğlu
stated that food waste in the service sector reaches 4.2 tons per business per
year, and that awareness of the causes, consequences and solutions of food loss
and waste will be provided with the campaign launched today; that measures
specific to every stage of the food supply chain will be developed from soil to
table, and the recycling concept will be implemented more effectively.
Hisarcıklıoğlu
underlined that Turkey will become a role model in the international community
with this campaign and conveyed his thanks to those who brought the campaign to
the country.
Hisarcıklıoğlu
stated that they continue to work in cooperation with the Ministry of
Agriculture and Forestry and produce projects, “We strengthen our cooperation
with the Ministry of Agriculture, together with the Protect Your Food Campaign
after the Digital Agricultural Market. As TOBB, we are very pleased to be
involved in these projects. For faster growth of the Protect Your Food
Campaign, as TOBB, together with our 365 chambers and exchanges, as well as our
1.5 million members, we will work all across the country and in all local media.”
