M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB), was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the ICC, the world’s largest business organization covering more than 45 million companies in 170 countries. Hisarcıklıoğlu, who entered the management of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which was established by the business world after the First World War with the slogan ‘merchants of peace’, at the General Assembly held in Geneva, said, “I will carry out this duty on behalf of the Turkish business world for 3 years. I will carry the demands and problems of the Turkish business world to the ICC agenda.”
- Operating in 170 countries
Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, who was elected as a
member of the Board of Directors at the ICC World Council held in Geneva, will
serve in the 2023-2026 period. The ICC includes the World Federation of
Chambers, the International Court of Arbitration and the World Institute of
Labor Law. Hisarcıklıoğlu will also have a say in these boards by entering the
ICC administration. ICC, whose central secretariat is located in Paris, is a
100-year-old organization. The International Chamber of Commerce, of which the
world’s giant companies are members, is the largest global business world
organization representing more than 45 million companies in more than 170
countries and has gained Observer Status at the United Nations.
- Hisarcıklıoğlu: “An honor”
Giving information about his election to the
ICC administration, TOBB President Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “As we enter a new era
in which there will be significant changes in the way of doing business on a
global scale, it is very important to take part in global consultation
mechanisms. As TOBB, we have a wide international network. We are involved in
the management of all institutions representing the private sector worldwide.
It is an honor for us to represent our country and our business world at the
ICC, the only organization representing the global business world at the United
Nations, where the rules of trade are set. The building blocks of the future in
the economy are designed in such institutions. Hisarcıklıoğlu also served on
the ICC Board of Directors between 2012 and 2018.
- First woman president
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) was
founded in 1919 by the business communities of Belgium, England, France, Italy,
and the USA. Founded in the aftermath of World War I with the slogan “Merchants
of Peace”, the ICC has Observer status at the United Nations General
Assembly. ICC Technical Commissions
prepare rules and laws to facilitate international commercial transactions, as
well as proposals to contribute to discussions between policy products and
government. There are 12 technical commissions under the umbrella of ICC. These
are; Banking, Environment and Energy, Digital Economy, Intellectual Property,
Customs and Trade Facilitation, Corporate Responsibility and Anti-Corruption,
Marketing and Advertising, Competition Policy, Arbitration, Trade Law and
Practice, Trade and Investment Policy, Taxation.
Maria Fernanda Garza, CEO of Orestia, a small
household goods manufacturer in Mexico, was elected as the first female
President of the International Chamber of Commerce in 2022. John Denton is the
Secretary General of the ICC.
- ICC Türkiye
The ICC Türkiye National Committee, which
operates under the umbrella of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of
Türkiye (TOBB), has been representing the ICC in Türkiye since 1934. The
Turkish National Committee continues its activities in order to contribute to
the work of the Turkish business world, to increase its competitiveness and to increase
Türkiye’s share from the global economy.
